US Open Championships History:

The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895, on a nine whole route at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a 36-hole rivalry and was played in a single day. Ten professional and one amateur entered. The victor was a 21-year-old Englishman named Horace Rawlins, who had arrived in the U.S. in January that year to take up a position at the host club. He received $150 cash out of a prize fund of $335, plus a $50 gold medal; his club received the Open Championship Cup trophy, which was presented by the USGA. In the beginning, the tournament was dominated by experienced British players until 1911, when John J. McDermott became the first native-born American winner. American golfers soon begin to succeed regularly and the tournament evolved to become one of the four majors. U.S. Open cup at the 2008 PGA Golf Show. Since 1911, the title has been won approximately exclusively by players from the United States. Since 1950, players from only six countries other than the United States have won the championship, most notably South Africa, which has won five times since 1965. A streak of four consecutive non-American winners occurred from 2004 to 2007 for the first time since 1910. These four groups of actors, South African Retief Goosen (2004), New Zealander Michael Campbell (2005), Australian Geoff Ogilvy (2006) and Argentine Ángel Cabrera (2007), are all from countries in the Southern Hemisphere. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (2010) became the first European player to win the event since Tony Jacklin of England in 1970.

The 2011 US Open to be broadcast live on Super Sport returns to the Congressional Country Club for only the second time in its history, a venue that will evoke reminiscences of 1997 for Ernie Els.

In 1997, with the US Open being played at the Congressional Country Club, Els defeated Colin Montgomerie by one stroke to win his second US Open Championship, and it’s this memory that will be lingering in his mind as he attempts to win for the third time in Maryland.

Recently inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame and now championing a club that he once called for to be banned, the belly broom putter, the “large simple” says he is starting to enjoy his game for the first time in over 10 years and is looking forward to the tournament.

“TV LINK :: US Open Championships 2011”

Maryland may not seem like a golf Mecca, but it has some very important ties to the pastime of professional golf. With the U.S. Open in municipality this week at Congressional for the first time since 1997 and the recent release of Adam Schupak’s excellent book on former PGA Tour official Deane Beman, entitled Deane Beman: Golf’s Driving Force, we had an electronic Q&A with Mr. Beman about the importance of the region to him and the tour.

RYAN BALLENGEE: Bethesda means a lot to the PGA Tour, but most populace don’t know that – or that it means a lot because of you. What’s the prominence of the town to the tour?

DEANE BEMAN: The PGA TOUR has a rich the past in the metropolitan Washington area. The Capitol City Open was played in the 50's, Congressional hosted a Tour event in the late 50's, and, of course, the U. S. Open was first played at Columbia Country Club, I believe in 1921, and Congressional will host its third Open Championship.

When I became Commissioner, the PGA TOUR headquarters was located in Bethesda for five years. The modern history of the PGA TOUR began in Bethesda, Md.

RB: Congressional was a part of the PGA Tour schedule for years, long before the AT&T National. What’s your view on having the Open back here?

DB: Any community is enhanced by hosting a U.S. Open. A U.S. Open coming to the same course for the third time only punctuates its status in golf.

RB: You had every intention of regulating equipment up until and through the lawsuit with Karsten. What’s your view of the job the USGA has done in stemming the tide of equipment’s influence?

DB: The USGA has taken the first step in its attempt to rein in technology with the groove rule two years ago. I hope it’s only the first step.

RB: You staked his job on the ability to identify and construct a course to host the PGA Tour’s biggest event. How does Deane view the USGA’s current rota of courses?

DB: The USGA’s policy of going back to the traditional courses has contributed to the remarkable success of this event. Recently the USGA has added some modern courses to the rota which continues to enhance the event.

RB: You have roots in this town and it seems golf has always found a way to have strong roots here, too. What are your thoughts on the importance of the capital area to the game?

DB: Just as much as the PGA TOUR’s playing events in the Washington, D.C. area and major championships going there periodically, the numerous Presidents have embraced the values of golf; and that has contributed just as much to the game as the competitions in the Washington area.

RB: What is your favorite personal D.C. golf memory?

DB: I have two. I played my first tournament at Congressional at age 13 and shot 113 — so much for lucky thirteen.
