Venue ::

Wembley Stadium was selected as the venue for the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final at a meeting of the UEFA decision-making group in Nyon, Switzerland, on 29 January 2009. Other stadia in argument to host the final included the Allianz Arena in Munich and Berlin's Olympiastadion. The Allianz Arena will instead host the 2012 final.The weekend set aside by UEFA for the 2011 Champions League Final was originally scheduled by The Football League as the date for the Football League play-off finals, which are usually held on the British May bank holiday weekend; however, due to UEFA's requirement that they be given exclusive employ of the venue in the lead-up to the final, the play-off finals had to be relocated. Due to this break of their contract with The Football Association, The Football League demanded compensation. On 21 January 2011, as part of resolution conformity with the FA, the League One and League Two play-off finals were moved to Old Trafford, Manchester, to be played respectively on 29 May and 28 May 2011; the Championship play-off final was not rescheduled. The Conference National play-off final was also moved to Manchester, to be played at the City of Manchester Stadium on 21 May 2011.

UEFA's diplomat for the 2011 Champions League Final is former Tottenham Hotspur forward Gary Lineker. In his first duty as diplomat, on 26 August 2010, Lineker helped to conduct the draw for the collection stage of the competition. Lineker was later involved in the unveiling of the branding design for the 2011 final at an event at Wembley Stadium on 25 November 2010. Hosted by Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, the event was also attend by UEFA competitions director Giorgio Marchetti, former British Minister for Sport and representative of the City of London Kate Hoey, General Secretary of The Football Association Alex Horne, and England Women's international Faye White. The logo for the final is in the style of a heraldic crest and features the European Champion Clubs' Cup in the centre, flanked by two lions. According to the designers of the logo, London-based Radiant Studios, the lions are intended to represent the two teams that will contest the final, battling over the trophy. The use of traditional elements in a contemporary style in the design is said to have been inspired by modern British designers such as Vivienne Westwood and tailors on Savile Row.

Fast bowler Glenn McGrath rocked India with the prize wicket of Tendulkar (four) in his opening spell. India seemed to be chasing a mirage thereafrer despite Virender Sehwag's 82 and were bowled out for 234.

Disappointment was also in store for spectators in Bridgetown when the rain-hit final between Australia and Sri Lanka ended in semi-darkness.
The offcials believed that 36 overs had to be completed in Sri Lanka's innings, apparently forgetting a minimum of were needed to obtain a result.

Steve Waugh was on 56 when he offered a simple catch to South African century-maker Herschelle Gibbs, who held the ball before dropping it in premature celebrations.

The Australian captain needed just that slice of fortune to steer his team to a crucial win with an unbeaten century.

The final was an anti-climax, with Australia thrashing Pakistan by eight wickets. Leg-spin magican Shane Warme grabbed four wickets.

Lance Klusener, with his amazing big-hitting, emerged as one of the stars along with Pakistani paceman Shoaib Akhtar, who was involved in fascinating duels with batsmen.

India broke the monotony of low-scoring games, with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid adding a record 318 against Sri Lanka, and Dravid and Saching Tendulkar putting on 237 for the third wicket against Kenya.

The tournament was also not withour surprise results, with Zimbabwe beating South Africa and Bangladesh defeating Pakistan in group matches.

The tournament was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand and had all the trappings of a modern event-coloured clothing, white balls and black sightscreens. But Kepler Wesscls's South Africans were not amused because it also had a strange 'rain rule'. Rain halted South Africa's chase when they needed 22 to win off 13 balls against England in the semi-final. The target was revised to a ridiculous 21 off just one ball when the game resumed.

The tournament had a new format with a then record 39 matches. Nine teams played each other in the league phase, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals.

Pakistan's recovery from the brink to win the titel under inspirational skipper Imran Khan and New Zealand captain Martin Crowe's shrewd tactics of using off-spinner Dipak Patel in the early overs were among the highlights.

Pakistan were facing elimination after winning just one of their first five matehes. Imran's instructions to his team to fight like 'cornered tigers' produced results as his side won their last five matches.

Crowe defied conventions, giving the new ball to spinner Patel to surprise the opposition. New Zealand pulled off an upset in the tournament's opener when pated coneeded just 36 in 10 overs in his team's win over Australia. The in-form New Zeland kept playing impressively to move into the semi-final at Aucklend where they ran into an unpredictable Pakistan. They rode on Crowe's superb 91 to post a competitive 262-7.

Pakistan found a match-winner in young Inzamam-ul-Haq when the asking-rate was climbing. Imzamam, his captain's choice, announced his international cricket with a 37-ball 60 to help his team win.

Imran led from the front against England, top-scoring with 72 to help his side post 249-6. England then folundered against the leg-spin of Mushtap Ahmed, who removed Gooch, Graeme Hick and Dermont Reeve. Neil Fairbrother top-scored for England with 62 before Imran sparked celebrations in his team's camp by taking the last wicket.

Australia rode on David Boon's 75 to post 253-5, a total which never looked safe during the Bill Athey-Mike Gatting partnership. England were strongly placed at 135-2 before disaster struck.

Gatting (41) attempted a revers-sweep off his counter-part Border, an occasional left-arm spinner, only to give wicket-keeper Greg Dyer a simple catch. England eventually fell short in their second appearance in the final.

West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd was poised to hold aloft the World Cup for a third time, to see Kapil's 'Devils' from India snatch it away in one biggest surprises. The 17-day event was bigger than the previous ones as there were 27 matches instead of 15, with each side playing against the other twice in the four-team group.

The tournament began on a sensationl note, with India shocking the West Indies in a group match at Old Trafford and minnows Zimbabwe upsetting Australia on the strength of a superb all-round performance by Duncan Fletcher, who later coached England.

Australia were to face to the West Indies fury in the next match as they were dismissed for 151 chasing a 253-run target. The West Indies won their remaining four group matches before putting it across Pakistan in the semi-final.

India faced many anxious moments, lossing to the West Indies in their second group encounter and then to Australia before finding themselves in a deep trouble against Zimbabwe. They were 17-5 when Dev played a brilliant innings at Tunrbidge Well, a blazing 175 not out off just 138 balls.

India beat Australia in the last group match to set up a semi-final clash with England. They proved their all-round ability to defeat the hosts by six wickets.

It looked a three-in-row for the West Indies when India managed only 183 in the final aginst a formidable pace attack of Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Michael Holding and Macoln Marshall.

But Indian medium-pacers Madan Lal, Mohinder Amarnath, Balwinder Sandhu and Roger Binny were superbly marshalled by Dev.

If there were one catch that swung the final India's way, it was Dev's to account for Richards had been dominating the Indian attack before he mishooked a Lal bouncer for Dev, who ran back towards mid-wicket to hold the ball and chang the cours of the match.

The days of favourites had gone as the West Indies never reached the final again. Cricket was never the same in India where players were accorded status.

The West Indies, England, Pakistan and New Zealand qualified for the semi-finals. The only surprise was Sri Landa's victory over India in a group match which was to help them gain Test status in early 1980s.

The semi-finals were evenly contested, with England beating New Zealand by nine runs at Old Trafford and the West Indies prevailing over Pakistan by 43 runs at the Oval.

The West Indies West Indies were in trouble at 99-4 in the final after being put in to bat by England skipper Mike Brearey, but found saviours in Richards and King who put on 139 for the fifth wicket.

England's tactics left a lot to be desired, batting as if they were playing in a Test match. Openers Geoff Byctt and Brearley put on 129, but consumed more than half of stipulated overs. The remaining batsmen found it difficult to keep pace with the required run-rate and England lost by 92 runs.

The top two sides from each four-team group entered the semi-finals. The tournament lasted just a fortnight with 60-overs-a-side games.

Four group games were held on each of the first three the semi-finals on the same say, something unthinkable in the modern age of television and marketing. England, Australia and New Zealand easily qualified for the last-four, but the West Indies were involved in the first-ever close match of the World Cup, against Pakistan at Edgbaston. The West Indies thrashed New Zealand by five wickets in the semi-final, but Australia had to bank on Gary Gilmour's all-round performanc (6-14 and 28 not out) to bear England in the other.

The West Indies were 50-3 before posting 291-8 off 60 overs despite a five-wicket effort from Gilmour.

Australian captain Ian chappell led from the from the front with an impressive 62, but fast bowler Keith Boyce took four wickets to reduce Australia to 233-9.

The game was not over as the over as the last-wicket pair of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson threarened to conjure up an unlikely victory. The fight back ended when Thomson became the fifth run-out victim trying to steal a bye to wicket-keeper Murray, who hir the stumps with just balls remaining. Australia lost by 17 runs in a fitting finale to the tournament.
